Asaba, Delta State – September 23, 2025 — The Executive Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, has praised councillors across Delta State for organizing the first-ever symposium of the Delta Councillors Forum.
Speaking on Wednesday in Asaba, Agbateyiniro described the event as a major step forward for political development in the state’s local government system.
“This is a very good development,” he said. “It is the first time councillors in Delta State have been able to put themselves together and organize such a symposium. I think it is important that I commend and appreciate them for this wonderful feat.”
The event, which brought together council chairmen, councillors, and other stakeholders, focused on how to reposition local governance in Nigeria in the wake of local government autonomy.
The chairman noted that the discussions highlighted the relationship between councillors, the executive arm of government, and the communities they serve. According to him, the symposium opened new opportunities for collaboration.
“The onus now lies on us,” he explained. “Nobody has a monopoly of knowledge, and that is the essence of this symposium. When we return to our various local governments, all the lessons we have learned here about improving the relationship between councillors, chairmen, and communities should be put into practice.”
When asked how councillors can sustain peace with the executive arm, Agbateyiniro emphasized the need for cooperation while respecting the constitution.
“Councillors have their constitutional responsibilities, and chairmen also have theirs,” he said. “For harmony, both sides should work together in the interest of the local government. That is how development and peace can be sustained.”
The symposium, themed “Repositioning the Grassroots: Strengthening Local Governance for Sustainable Development in Nigeria in the Wake of Local Government Autonomy,” brought together councillors, chairmen, and other political leaders from across Delta State.
