Warri Shines as Oborevwori Opens New NDDC Office, Urges Action on Bad Roads

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to work closely with state governments in repairing key federal roads across the Niger Delta region.

The Governor made the appeal on Friday during the inauguration of the new NDDC State Office in Warri, Delta State. He described the new building as a “symbol of shared commitment to development, inclusion, and better service delivery” for the people of the region.

Oborevwori said true progress in the Niger Delta can only be achieved through collaboration and renewed focus on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and empowerment.

He specifically urged the NDDC to fix failed roads that have made life difficult for commuters, noting that the Delta State Government has already approved ₦35.7 billion for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road—a major route connecting Delta to Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River States.

The Governor also announced plans for a joint meeting next month between the state government, Chevron, and the NDDC to discuss the Omadino–Okerenkoko–Escravos Road and other major projects.

Oborevwori praised NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for his leadership, describing the new office as a sign of stability and renewed purpose. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said has improved state finances, encouraged inclusiveness, and boosted public confidence in government.

“No state in Nigeria pays contractors faster than we do in Delta,” the Governor said proudly. “We are not borrowing and we owe no contractor.” He promised that his administration will continue to uphold transparency and accountability in all projects.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, said President Tinubu has directed the NDDC to complete all abandoned projects in the region. He highlighted some of the Commission’s recent successes, including:

Restoration of electricity in Okitipupa after 15 years without power.

Construction of bridges and electricity substations.

Launch of new healthcare and education projects across various states.

The Minister encouraged NDDC staff to maintain the new facilities and remain non-partisan, stressing that the Commission serves all communities in the Niger Delta equally.

Also speaking, NDDC Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, said the 7th Governing Board, appointed by President Tinubu, has improved governance by adopting a new transparency framework created with KPMG.

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, described the new office as pato rt of the agency’s shift “from transactions to transformation.” He revealed that the Commission is currently working with Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) on ₦650 billion worth of infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges, aimed at transforming the lives of Niger Deltans.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC; Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC; and several dignitaries from across the region.
