Today, history was made in Vatican City as Robert Prevost became the first American pope in the Catholic Church’s history. He is now the 267th pope, and he will lead over 1.3 billion Catholics around the world.
What Happened?
In a special election called a conclave, 133 cardinals from around the world gathered inside the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican to choose a new pope. After just two days of voting, they reached an agreement.
At about 6 p.m. (Vatican time) on Thursday, a cloud of white smoke rose from the special chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel. This white smoke is a traditional sign that a new pope has been chosen.
At the same time, the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica began to ring, and the large crowd waiting in St. Peter’s Square cheered with excitement. Many people were waving flags and taking photos as they waited to see the new pope appear for the first time.
A Very Quick Decision
This conclave was one of the shortest in history, ending after only three rounds of voting in just two days. Only two other popes—Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 and Pope Francis in 2013—were also chosen this quickly.
Who is Pope Robert Prevost?
Robert Prevost is from the United States and is now the first person from America to become pope. This is a big moment for the U.S. and for Catholics everywhere. Pope Robert is known for being kind, wise, and a great leader in the church.
He is expected to step out soon onto the famous red balcony at St. Peter’s Basilica and give his first speech to the world as the new pope.
Why Is This Important?
The pope is the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and helps guide millions of people in faith and important world issues. Every time a new pope is elected, it is a big moment in history.
