US donates nuclear detection systems to Nigeria Police Force

The United States has donated nuclear detection system vans and equipment valued at over $2 million to the explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The donation took place at the Police EOD headquarters annex in Lagos.

During the donation, the office of nuclear smuggling detection and deterrence, the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), also organized a two-week training for 30 officers of the EOD command of the NPF.

The officers of the EOD command who received the exercise also carried out a public demonstration on the use of the mobile nuclear detection system.

Ten other officers were also trained on the maintenance of the donated equipment.

The training was focused on the task of the detection equipment to combat the smuggling of nuclear and radioactive elements.

Present at the donation were Steward Voit, sustainability manager of the US Department of Energy’s Office of nuclear smuggling detection and deterrence, and Ibrahim Zanna, commissioner of police, EOD command.
