Ovwor, Delta State – Tensions have erupted in the Ovwor community of Ughelli North Local Government Area, leading to multiple casualties following a dispute over the timing of the annual feast.
The newly appointed chief priest requested that the event be held in August, while a prominent local chief insisted it be postponed until December. The disagreement has escalated into violence, with reports indicating that some community youths were allegedly shot by security operatives deployed by the chief who opposed the August date.
In the wake of the conflict, multiple arrests have been made under the orders of the chief, further inflaming tensions within the community. The situation has sparked outrage, particularly among the women of Ovwor, who took to the streets in protest against the actions taken against their loved ones.
A video shared on social media by Ughellinetwork on Thursday, August 29, 2024, captures the women’s protest, demanding justice and condemning the use of force against the youths. The incident has drawn widespread attention, raising concerns about the use of authority and the handling of traditional disputes within the community.
