Unbelievable: Man arrested for stealing car batteries in Warri

A young man identified as Donald Ekun, from Akwa Ibom State was caught with a stolen vehicle battery in the rubber plantation area of Cemetery Road, in Warri, Delta State.

According to reports, the suspect was caught in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2020.

The suspect Donald Ekun, who hails from Akwa Ibom State but resides in the Kona Chemist area near Hausa Quarters by Warri/Sapele Road confessed to journalists that they were two members gang who specialized in the act of stealing batteries of parked vehicles.

While being interrogated, the suspect said his partner named Godbless out-ran the security men and that the said Godbless was the one that had the master key which they used in unlocking parked vehicles.

He further admitted that they also specialized in stealing concrete slabs used in covering gutters adding that they were the brains behind the missing concrete slabs in front of MRS Filling Station along Warri/ Sapele Road by Cemetery Road Junction.

The suspect also took men of the vigilante group to where a dark blue Jetta car was parked at Igbudu Market, as he confessed that they removed the battery from the car.

Investigation revealed that the vandalized car was stolen from his owner who lives in the Okumagba Estate area, far away from the town.

Vital documents, identity cards of the owner of the car were recovered from the car.

Meanwhile, contact the owner of the car, one Mr. Sunday Nnoworie, confirmed that his car was stolen from where it was parked on Friday, July 24, 2020.

The Chairman of Igbudu Unit 11, Chief Julius Edafiadjebre who also was invited to the scene of crime attested that there had been cases of stolen vehicle batteries in the area adding that he was a two-time victim.

Confessing to the crime, the suspect said that the stolen vehicle batteries were sold for N2,500 each pointing out that a set of five concrete slabs were sold for N20,000.

The suspect also led men of the Red Bar vigilante security group to the store of one of the alleged buyers of stolen vehicle batteries. The alleged buyer was arrested with him and is currently in Police ‘ A’ Divisional Headquarters, Warri.
