UK Citizen on the Run for Alleged Plot to Topple Nigerian Government

The Nigeria Police Force has declared British national Andrew Wynne wanted in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. Wynne is accused of sponsoring the #EndBadgovernance protests that took place across Nigeria from August 1st to 10th, 2024. The protests, which were marked by widespread unrest, are now under investigation for being part of a larger scheme to destabilize the country.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, on Monday, Wynne fled the country as investigations intensified. Wynne, along with his Nigerian coordinator, Lucky Ehis Obiyan, has been declared wanted, and a global manhunt has been initiated to apprehend them. Adejobi revealed that nine other suspects involved in the protests have been arrested, with evidence suggesting they received substantial financial backing from foreign sources to create chaos and justify an unconstitutional regime change.

The police allege that Andrew Wynne, also known by the aliases Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, established a network of sleeper cells and orchestrated violent activities across the nation. Wynne allegedly used the cover of an ‘Iva Valley Bookshop’ and ‘STARS of Nations Schools’ in Abuja to conduct his subversive activities. He is accused of mobilizing and deploying billions of naira to his Nigerian collaborators, urging them to incite violence and provoke international condemnation of the Nigerian government.

The Nigerian Police have arraigned ten suspects in connection with the plot on charges of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has activated INTERPOL and other global policing networks to assist in the ongoing investigation and bring Wynne and his associates to justice. The IGP emphasized the Force’s commitment to safeguarding national security while respecting citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.
