Uduaghan: How We’re Supporting Delta’s Most Vulnerable Families

Highlights Two Years of Humanitarian Impact

Asaba, Delta State — The Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Development, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, has shared some exciting news! She said that in just two years, her ministry has helped more than 7,000 poor and vulnerable families across all 25 local government areas in Delta State.

Ms. Orode spoke about this at the State Secretariat in Asaba during an interview marking the second anniversary of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.

She explained that her ministry’s main job is to help families who are really struggling—families that don’t have enough money or support. The ministry does not help every household, but focuses on those who are most in need.

“Our work is to support the governor in helping the poor and vulnerable,” she said. “We were specially created to help these households.”

Since she became Commissioner, the ministry has done several projects. One of the most important ones is the MORE Grant Scheme. This project was made to support three different groups:

  1. Artisans – These are skilled workers like carpenters or tailors who come from poor homes.
  2. Petty Traders – These are mostly women who sell things like akara (bean cakes), ugu (vegetables), and pepper on the streets.
  3. Female Entrepreneurs – These are women who want to grow their small businesses. This group was part of an earlier program called GEST.

Through the MORE Grant Scheme, about 1,600 petty traders across all 25 local governments received grants (free money to support their business) between ₦70,000 and ₦100,000. Ms. Orode explained that the amount each person received was based on what they sold and how much help they needed.

For the female entrepreneurs, the ministry went a step further by offering special training before giving them money. The training covered important skills like how to manage a business and keep records. This was done in partnership with the Enterprise Development Centre in Lagos and Pan-African University.

Ms. Orode thanked the Governor for giving her and the ministry the support they needed to carry out all these good works. She said the ministry is proud to be making a difference in the lives of Delta people who need it the most.

So far, it’s clear that the Humanitarian Ministry is doing a great job in lifting up those who need help the most in Delta State.
