President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reached out to Anthony Joshua, the Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion, following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the boxer injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
The accident occurred along a busy section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway around 11:00 a.m. on Monday, according to eyewitnesses. Reports said the vehicle conveying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated. The incident was earlier reported by The Punch.
Joshua sustained injuries in the crash and was immediately rushed to a hospital in Ogun State, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Two members of his entourage reportedly died as a result of the accident.
In a telephone conversation on Monday, President Tinubu personally expressed his condolences to Joshua over the loss of his associates and wished him a speedy recovery. The President said he also prayed for the boxer, who assured him that he was receiving proper medical care.
President Tinubu further spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering words of comfort and prayers. According to the President, she expressed deep appreciation for the call and the concern shown.
The President also contacted Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua. Governor Abiodun assured Tinubu that the state government was doing everything possible to ensure the boxer receives the best medical attention.
Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, had expressed sympathy in a message posted on X, describing the incident as painful and unfortunate. He described Joshua as a symbol of courage, discipline, and national pride, and urged Nigerians to support one another in times of grief.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” the President said, while praying for Joshua’s quick recovery and for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
The President’s message was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, dated December 29, 2025.
