President Bola Tinubu has encouraged Nigerians to test a new Personal Income Tax calculator designed to help citizens understand how much tax they would pay under the government’s recently signed tax reforms.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, the President said the calculator will allow individuals to compare their current tax payments with what they would owe under the new system, which is set to take effect in January 2026.
Tinubu explained that the tax reforms are aimed at building a fairer and more transparent system, one that protects low-income earners and ensures that no one is unfairly burdened.
“A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable,” Tinubu said.
“With the new tax laws I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.”
According to him, the calculator is designed to show clearly how the reforms protect low-income earners, ensure progressivity, and simplify compliance. This means that people who earn less will pay less in taxes, while those with higher incomes will contribute more, making the system fairer for everyone.
Tinubu added that the reforms are part of his administration’s commitment to renewing hope and rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s economy, urging citizens to have confidence in the country’s future.
“Together, we are renewing hope in the Nigeria of our dreams. Take a bet on our country. Bet on Nigeria to work for you, your family, and your community,” he said.
