Tinubu Hails Bill Gates as a Global Inspiration, Awards Him CFR

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, something special happened in Lagos. President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria awarded Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the country’s highest national honours — Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

But what’s the big deal, and why should care?

A Thank You to a Man Who Helps the World

President Tinubu said Gates wasn’t just a tech genius; he’s someone who has spent years helping the world’s poorest people, including many in Nigeria. Whether it’s fighting diseases, helping farmers, or saving mothers during childbirth, Gates has shown real commitment to improving lives.

“Bill Gates is one of the greatest human beings in the world,” President Tinubu said. “His actions inspire leaders like me.”

What Has Gates Done for Nigeria?

The Minister of Health and Social Development, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, explained that the Gates Foundation has invested over $2 billion (about ₦3 trillion) in Nigeria. Here’s what that money has helped with:

  • Healthcare: Helping to get more vaccines into communities.
  • Fighting Polio: Gates worked with Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote and traditional leaders to convince families in Northern Nigeria to vaccinate their children.
  • Eradicating Polio: Thanks to that effort, Nigeria successfully wiped out polio.
  • Helping Young Girls: The Foundation has helped introduce HPV vaccines to protect girls (ages 9–14) from cervical cancer. Nigeria is leading the way in getting this vaccine to girls across the country.
  • Fighting Malaria & Malnutrition: Gates said the Foundation’s next big goal is to end malaria in Nigeria in the next 20 years and reduce hunger.

Bill Gates Responds: “This Honour Means a Lot”

In his speech, Gates said the award was not just for him but for the thousands of people working with him.

“It’s been 25 years of working in Nigeria, and we’ve made great progress,” he said. “Child death rates are down, polio is gone, and we’re just getting started.”

He also praised the teamwork between Nigerian leaders, his Foundation, and Dangote’s efforts.

Why Should You Care?

Even if you don’t follow politics or global philanthropy, this story matters. It shows:

  • How powerful teamwork can be — governments, billionaires, and regular people working together can save millions of lives.
  • That education and vaccines matter — thanks to awareness and health efforts, fewer children are dying, and girls are getting protection from deadly diseases.
  • That leadership isn’t just about power — it’s about impact. Gates may not be a president, but his actions have changed lives in Nigeria more than many world leaders.

Who Else Was There?

The award ceremony was attended by:

  • Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and long-time partner of Gates.
  • Hon. Zephaniah Jisalo, Minister of Special Duties.
  • Dr. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, who represents people with disabilities.
  • Other top members of the Gates Foundation.

Final Thought

This isn’t just a rich man getting a medal. It’s a message that real change comes from care, action, and partnership. Whether you’re a student, teacher, or future leader — you can be part of that change too.

Bill Gates once built software that changed the world. Today, he’s helping to build a healthier, stronger future — and Nigeria is saying “thank you.”
