President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a powerful address today at a joint session of the National Assembly to mark Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day. The speech highlighted the nation’s democratic journey, honored past heroes, and outlined key economic and security achievements under his administration.
A Tribute to Democracy Heroes
President Tinubu began by paying tribute to those who fought for Nigeria’s democracy, including Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, election, and his running mate, Babagana Kingibe. He also remembered activists like Kudirat Abiola, Pa Alfred Rewane, and journalists like Bagauda Kaltho, who were killed or imprisoned under military rule.
Posthumous national honors were announced for over 50 democracy champions, including:
- Kudirat Abiola (CFR) – A leading voice in the June 12 struggle.
- Ken Saro-Wiwa (CON) – Environmental activist executed in 1995.
- Chief Bola Ige (CFR) – Former Attorney-General assassinated in 2001.
Living legends like Prof. Wole Soyinka (GCON) and veteran journalist Sam Amuka-Pemu (CON) were also honored.
Tinubu Rejects One-Party State Claims
The President dismissed rumors that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), aims to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. “I would be the last person to advocate such a scheme,” he said, recalling his resistance to similar moves in 2003.
He welcomed new APC members, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Pastor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), but stressed that political competition is healthy for democracy.
Economic Growth & Reforms
Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s economic progress, including:
- GDP growth of 3.4% in 2024, with Q4 hitting 4.6%—the highest in a decade.
- Falling inflation, stabilizing food prices (rice, beans).
- Fivefold increase in foreign reserves and a stronger Naira.
- Over 100,000 Nigerians benefiting from low-interest consumer credit.
New initiatives launching in July 2025:
- Consumer credit for 400,000 youths, including NYSC members.
- Fibre optic cable expansion to boost internet access nationwide.
Security & Infrastructure Improvements
The President praised the military’s efforts in fighting terrorism and securing highways. He also announced:
- New tax reforms to support small businesses.
- A National Credit Guarantee Company (with ₦100 billion funding) to boost industries.
Call for Unity & Tolerance
Tinubu urged lawmakers to prioritize dialogue over division and protect free speech. “Call me names, and I will still defend your right to do so,” he said, emphasizing democracy’s resilience.
The President closed by urging Nigerians to stay hopeful, saying: “Our democracy is alive, and our dream of prosperity is within reach.”
