Tensions Rise in Benue as Gunmen Kill Labour Party Chairman

Benue State, Nigeria — In a disturbing incident that has heightened tensions in Ado Local Government Area, Benue State, suspected herdsmen have reportedly killed Mr Sunday Oche, the Labour Party Chairman for Igumale Ward 1. The attack took place on Tuesday afternoon as Oche was returning from his cassava farm with five others. The ambush resulted in Oche’s death, while the others sustained serious injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts, the group was traveling on two motorbikes when they were ambushed by the armed assailants. The gunmen, allegedly herdsmen, flagged down the group before shooting Oche, who was leading the convoy. He died on the spot, while the others managed to escape despite suffering injuries.

Local youths who rushed to the scene after hearing about the attack found that the gunmen had already fled, leaving behind Oche’s lifeless body. The tragedy has sparked concerns among residents, with many fearing an escalation of violence in the area.

Tersoo Orbunde, the Benue State Labour Party Publicity Secretary, confirmed the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their Ward Chairman. “He went to his cassava farm and was attacked and killed. His body has been recovered, and arrangements are being made for his burial,” Orbunde said. The party is reportedly providing support to Oche’s family during this difficult time.

While local authorities have been informed, the police have yet to officially confirm the incident. Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that she had not received detailed information regarding the attack.

The injured survivors of the ambush have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Oche’s burial is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024.

This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents linked to herdsmen in the region, further fueling concerns over security in Benue State. Local communities are calling for increased protection and a more robust response from security forces to prevent further loss of life.
