Suspected cultists set final-year student ablaze for refusing cult initiation

A final-year student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), identified as Victor Oke, has been attacked by suspected cultists for his rejection to join their secret cult.

Oke who is a part-time student of political science at the institution was attacked with cutlasses, stones, and later set ablaze by the attackers before he was rescued by residents.

The Public Relations Officer for UNIOSUN, Ademola Adesoji, spoke about the incident in a statement, stating that the institution had reached out to the student’s family after he failed to come for his final paper which was held on Saturday.

In the statement, the spokesperson said the student was attacked at the Akede area of Osogbo, the state capital.

Adesoji quoted eyewitnesses as saying the student was attacked by his assailants with cutlasses, stones before he was set ablaze until the resident came to his rescue.

According to him, he said “The eyewitnesses living in the area where the incident happened reported that they heard Oke Ademiju Victor shouting that he was not joining their cult, while they continued to hit him with cutlasses, hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.”

“We have since been following up with the parents and it is confirmed that he was rushed to the university’s teaching hospital for treatment and later moved to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.”

Adesoji also said that the institution is working with the police and relevant agencies to ensure those who attacked the student are brought to book, he added.
