The Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has been named as the best manager of the AFCON group stage at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Cameroon.
This was disclosed in a post that was shared on AFCON’s Twitter page on Friday.
Eguavoen who replaced Gernot Rohr in December 2021, was named as the best coach after he won all matches during the group stage and attain nine points to qualify to the knockout stage.
According to reports, he has been praised by many of the footballers in the squad for bestowing upon newly-fangled freedom and credited for adding a breath of fresh air to the team.
Others who were awarded include Vincent Aboubakar, from Cameroon was named the best player in the group stage for scoring five goals.
Egypt’s Mohamed El Shenawy was handed the gong for the safest pair of hands throughout the group stage for conceding just one goal in three games.
Guinea’s Ilaix Moriba was also named the best young player on the group stage. The 19-year-old FC Barcelona youth product was instrumental for Guinea as they finished second in Group B.
However, on Sunday, the Super Eagles are scheduled to face Tunisia in the second round of 16.
