On Monday, an overcrowded dugout canoe sank off the north coast in West Africa state in Guinea and over 15 people died.
It was gathered that the group had been traveling to a wedding on an island near Kanfarande when their boat capsized.
According to a Naval officer that was stationed in Boke, a city with about 50 kilometers (30 miles) to the east said he can’t tell how many people are still in the water but the navy brought out 15 bodies from the ocean on Monday stating that an unknown number of people had been aboard the boat while traveling to a wedding on an island near Kanfarande when their boat capsized.
Another official working in Boke’s regional government, who declined to be named, said the canoe left when the tide was high and the sea was choppy.
He said that a search operation is ongoing.
However, at Kanfarande town hall, another official who gave his name only as Rica said the authorities do not yet know how many are missing, stating that “We are in shock.”
He said, dugout canoes — or “pirogues” — are a common form of transport between towns along the intricate coastline of northern Guinea and neighboring Guinea-Bissau.
He said also said that accidents aboard these traditional wooden vessels are common.
