The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has condemned the killing of 16 Kano-bound hunters in Edo State and is demanding compensation for their families.
The hunters, who were travelling from Elele in Rivers State to Kano, were attacked and lynched by a mob in Uromi, Edo State. The attack followed an alarm raised by some vigilante members who wrongly suspected the travellers of being kidnappers.
The Edo State government has confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects linked to the killings. The suspects are expected to be transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
During a visit to some of the victims’ families in Bankure LGA, Kano, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo assured them that justice would be served.
In a statement released on Monday, the minority caucus described the attack as “barbaric” and warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could threaten the country’s peace and unity.
“We find such brutal killings of innocent Nigerians in any part of the country by lawless mobs very reprehensible,” the statement read. “If allowed to fester, such actions could threaten the peace and unity of the country.”
The lawmakers urged Nigerians to refrain from mob violence and instead report any security concerns to law enforcement agencies. They also called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
“Also, adequate compensation should be paid to the affected families,” the caucus added.
The statement was signed by Kingsley Chinda, Minority Leader; Ali Isa, Minority Whip; and Aliyu Madaki, Deputy Minority Leader.
The lawmakers called on citizens to remain calm and allow the authorities to handle the matter, assuring that justice would be served.
