Nigerians will soon pay less for phone calls and internet services as the Federal Government has cancelled the 5% excise duty earlier imposed on telecommunications.
The decision, announced Thursday by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), follows months of criticism from consumers and industry players who said the levy was unfair and would worsen the cost of living.
The tax, introduced under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, was meant to cover both voice calls and data. But President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now directed its removal while reviewing the recently passed Finance Act, according to Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The move is expected to bring relief to more than 171 million mobile users nationwide, many of whom have already faced a 50% increase in tariffs earlier this year. Experts say the cancellation will help stabilize costs and give families and businesses some breathing space.
