Reasons why Sheikh Gumi says Nigeria doesn’t have credible Legislators

During a Zoom conference organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies
today Wednesday, 24, an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad, revealed why the federal lawmakers are not representing their people who voted for them.

He argues that their lack of credibility to address the security challenges has caused more danger in the country.

He also argued that Nigeria doesn’t have credible legislators in Nigeria? Because he asked, how did they get into their party? He said until we begin to vote credible leaders into the legislative arm of the government, the problems of insecurity cannot be solved.

Gumi faulted the lawmakers for failing in their responsibility to address the primary problem of their constituents which he said have contributed to the insecurity that is looming in the country.

According to him, the Senators and members of the House of Representatives have failed to listen to the plights of the people who voted for them.

He said the lawmakers are not good representatives of the people stating that the problems of insecurity cannot be tackled by the legislation.

While still speaking, Gumi also stated that the reason why he had been meeting with bandits to listen to them and give them a new orientation, was that the people are suffering and need to be heard.

He also advocates for multi-layered policing in the country as he calls for the devolution of central police in Nigeria, stating that, the state police should be supervised by the Federal Police for the state governors not to use to suppress people.

In his words, he said, “Do we have credible legislators in Nigeria? How did they get into their party? Until we begin to vote credible leaders into the legislative arm of the government, the problems of insecurity cannot be solved.

“Legislation cannot tackle insecurity. Listening to the grievances of the people at the grassroots level is very important which our legislators have neglected. And this is what I’m doing.

“We are talking about the legislation. What legislation are we talking about, when people are not called and listened to?”

“The state police with the supervision of the federal police will be needed but in a way that will not be used by the governors to suppress the people.
