RCCG Under Fire: Homosexuality Allegations Lead to Pastor Suspensions

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has announced the suspension of two of its pastors following allegations of same-sex misconduct. The church, known for its adherence to traditional Christian values, addressed the matter in a memo dated October 28, 2024, signed by Sunday Akande, RCCG’s national overseer.

In the official statement, RCCG emphasized its commitment to upholding biblical teachings, which it stated do not allow or tolerate acts of homosexuality. The memo, directed to the church’s administrative leadership, has instructed that an investigation be conducted to uncover the details surrounding the allegations.

The national overseer, Akande, stressed that the inquiry will be handled discreetly to protect the dignity of all parties involved. The investigation is expected to conclude within two weeks, and in the meantime, the pastors have been temporarily relieved of their duties.

“This issue is being taken very seriously,” Akande stated in the letter, “and the church’s investigation will be handled confidentially, with care and integrity, respecting all parties involved.”

In support of this stance, RCCG cited specific scriptures, including Leviticus 18:22 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which the church interprets as opposing same-sex relations. The church reiterated its commitment to these teachings as a core part of its doctrine.

While RCCG confirmed the suspension, one of the pastors, Ayorinde AdeBello, has strongly denied the allegations against him. In an Instagram post, AdeBello refuted claims of engaging in same-sex relations with male teenagers, asserting that his silence had been misinterpreted as an admission of guilt. He explained that a WhatsApp screenshot circulating online had been misquoted and taken out of context, adding that the conversation had centered around discussions on male reproductive health and self-esteem within a teenage boys’ group.

AdeBello expressed frustration, stating, “I have NEVER demanded sex from any male as payment or gratification for assistance, platforms, or positions.” He explained that the context of the WhatsApp messages had been twisted, saying it is “disheartening” to be portrayed as someone with inappropriate intentions toward teenagers.

RCCG’s decision and AdeBello’s denial have sparked broader conversations on how religious institutions handle sensitive allegations, balancing doctrinal stances with fairness and transparency. The outcome of the church’s investigation remains to be seen as it addresses these serious allegations within its community.
