ASABA, Nigeria — The Delta State Government has postponed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the 12-kilometre Ugbolu–Okpanam Road in Oshimili North Local Government Area.
The ceremony, which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, was called off due to heavy rainfall in the area, which made it impossible to proceed with the event.
Announcing the postponement in a statement on Tuesday morning, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the decision was taken in consideration of safety and environmental conditions caused by the torrential rain.
Aniagwu expressed regret over the postponement, noting that a new date for the groundbreaking would be announced soon.
“The heavy rainfall made it impractical to go ahead with the event as planned. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate the understanding of our invited guests and residents,” Aniagwu said.
He also conveyed the apologies of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was expected to lead the ceremony, to all stakeholders affected by the change in schedule.
According to the commissioner, the Ugbolu–Okpanam Road Project remains a key part of the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure and promoting economic development across the state.
Aniagwu reiterated that the Governor is determined to deliver on his MORE Agenda, which focuses on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security for Deltans.
“The State Government assures residents that the Ugbolu–Okpanam Road remains a top priority and that construction will commence as soon as conditions permit,” he added.
The 12-kilometre Ugbolu–Okpanam Road project is expected to enhance connectivity between the two communities, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activities in the surrounding areas when completed.
