Police to Resume Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit from January 2, 2026

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the need to curb criminal activities.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 15, 2025, the Force said the decision was taken after a careful review of current security trends and pending the final determination of a related matter currently before the court.

The police clarified that at no time did any court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, enforcement was previously suspended to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit registration process without pressure.

According to the police, recent developments have shown an increase in crimes carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. The Force said criminals and organised groups have taken advantage of the suspension to conceal their identities while committing offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

“In view of these disturbing trends, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit as a proactive step to protect lives and property,” the statement said.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally and in line with the law. He emphasised that officers have been directed to respect the rights of citizens and conduct all operations with civility and accountability.

The IGP also reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law, and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure a more secure country.

Motorists who require tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles fully comply with legal requirements before enforcement resumes.

The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
