Port Harcourt – The months-long political crisis that had rocked Rivers State has finally come to an end after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened and brokered peace among the warring parties.
For six months, Rivers State witnessed tension following a fierce political battle that threatened governance and democratic institutions in the state. The dispute involved Governor Siminalayi Fubara, former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Governor Fubara, in an address to the people of the state, confirmed that all parties have agreed to reconcile for the sake of peace and development. He revealed that President Tinubu played a “fatherly” role in bringing the crisis to an end and restoring democratic governance in the state.
“Our Leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike, CON, all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and I, as your Governor, have all accepted to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of our dear Rivers State,” the Governor said.
The Governor acknowledged that the political crisis came with “hard lessons” but assured residents that peace and stability had now returned. He also emphasised that leaders in the state must put aside their differences and focus on the common good of the people.
Fubara expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his decisive intervention, promising never to take the President’s kindness for granted. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the President and called on all political stakeholders and citizens to embrace this new chapter as a “fresh beginning” for Rivers State.
Addressing the concerns of those who still feel uncertain about the peace deal, Fubara said their fears are understood but stressed that “the costliest peace is cheaper than the cheapest war.” He assured that reconciliation, inclusiveness, and unity will guide the way forward.
The Governor urged everyone to work together with “renewed hope and determination” to build a stronger, more peaceful, and prosperous Rivers State.
