Pastor Okonkwo’s John 3:16 Tattoo Divides Christians Online

Popular relationship coach and founder of the David Christian Centre, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, has stirred widespread debate on social media after unveiling a tattoo inspired by a Bible verse to mark his 50th birthday.

The cleric revealed the tattoo in a video shared on his official Instagram page, where he documented the inking process as part of his birthday celebration. The video opened with a voice-over reading John 3:16, one of Christianity’s most referenced scriptures, before revealing the tattoo etched in Roman numerals as “III: XVI.”

What was intended as a personal milestone celebration quickly triggered intense reactions online, with opinions sharply divided among Christians, church members, and social media users over whether a pastor should have a tattoo, regardless of its biblical inspiration.

Several critics cited scriptural concerns, referencing passages they believe discourage body markings. An Instagram user, @iamqneth, wrote, “The Bible says we should not make a mark on our skin. I know the Bible hasn’t changed, so all I can say is hmmmm!” Another commenter, @sailorojay, questioned the example being set, saying, “Does this pastor not know it’s a sin to tattoo his skin? As a pastor, you should be leading members with what the Bible teaches.”

Some responses struck a more moderate tone, acknowledging Okonkwo’s influence while expressing discomfort. @v_olarinde commented, “All things are lawful, but not all things edify. I respect you so much, sir, but this doesn’t edify.”

However, a significant number of followers rallied behind the pastor, describing the tattoo as a symbolic and faith-driven expression rather than a violation of Christian values. @nnekaekpe referenced scripture in defence, writing, “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Another follower, @sheunnatural, reacted humorously, saying, “Now I can get my tattoo. My mentor gbe mi debe,” loosely translated as “My mentor has given me the courage.”

Others simply expressed admiration, with brief comments such as “I love it” and “Bold statement of faith.”

Pastor Okonkwo, who is widely known for his modern, youth-friendly approach to relationship and marriage counselling, later shared additional photos from his birthday celebration with the caption, “Still celebrating the big Five 0.”

As the debate continued to trend online, the pastor acknowledged the reactions but declined to immediately engage in the theological arguments. In a follow-up post, he wrote, “Those who want to hear about tattoos, drink water and relax. We will talk on Monday after the parties this weekend.”

The development has once again reignited conversations within Christian circles about personal liberty, symbolism, and the evolving expression of faith among contemporary church leaders.
