Asaba, Delta State – September 30, 2025 — It was a historic day for traders and residents of Asaba on Tuesday as the Executive Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon. (High Chief) Obi Kelvin Ezenyili (PhD), officially commissioned the newly reconstructed Ultra-Modern Ogbeogonogo Shopping Complex.
The commissioning ceremony, which was held in Asaba, was graced by top dignitaries, including the Special Guest of Honour, HRM, Obi (Prof) Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge SAN, the 14th Asagba of Asaba, palace chiefs, titled chiefs, members of the Oshimili South Legislative House, and representatives of various community groups.
Speaking at the event, Dr Ezenyili recalled the history of the Ogbeogonogo market, describing it as “a market that has stood the test of time but was unfortunately gutted by fire on two different occasions.” These tragedies, he noted, destroyed traders’ livelihoods and forced many into open street trading.
Although the government had previously built a new market structure, the number of displaced traders was still overwhelming, leading to the decision to construct a more spacious and modern shopping complex.
“Our policy is centred on infrastructural development,” the Chairman said. “This shopping complex is a product of that vision, ensuring our facilities match the cosmopolitan status of modern cities.”
The new shopping complex was constructed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Council and DADA Global Resources, a local construction company led by Asaba-born businessman Ogbueshi Dada Okonji.
Dr Ezenyili praised the company for delivering quality work within the agreed time frame. “DADA Global Resources has proved its mettle,” he said, applauding the contractor for a job well done.
The Chairman also reassured residents that his administration would continue to align with the MORE Agenda of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, while fulfilling all electoral promises to the people of Oshimili South.
In his remarks before cutting the tape, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, lauded the local government for its developmental strides.
He described the shopping complex as a project that fits into his broader vision of branding Asaba as a modern city, in line with the functions of local government as outlined in Nigeria’s Constitution.
The monarch also thanked Dr Ezenyili for involving an indigene, Ogbueshi Okonji, in the project. He, however, urged the Chairman to consider plans for an Asaba International Market to reduce pressure on the Ogbeogonogo market, and further appealed that Asaba indigenes should be given priority in shop allocations.
On his part, Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, Chairman of DADA Global Resources, expressed gratitude to the Oshimili South Council for trusting his company with the project. He described the shopping complex as “one of the good things happening under the reign of the Asagba,” promising continued support for community development.
The Ultra-Modern Ogbeogonogo Shopping Complex is expected to provide a safe, spacious, and well-organised environment for hundreds of traders and shoppers in Asaba.
With the commissioning, residents see it as not just the rebirth of a historic market, but also a major step toward building the city’s economy and boosting commercial activities.
