Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday inaugurated 30 one-bedroom flats built for officers and soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area. The governor promised that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of security personnel across the state.
Represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, Governor Oborevwori said the housing project was not only about providing buildings but also a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to improving the lives of soldiers who ensure peace and security in Delta.
He praised former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, for helping attract the Army barracks to Delta, and also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for showing renewed commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Oborevwori expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army, particularly the 63 Brigade and the 181 Amphibious Battalion, for their efforts in combating oil theft, crime, and other threats to peace in the state and the region.
“The 30 units of one-bedroom flats we are commissioning today symbolize our determination to improve the living conditions of the men and women who daily put their lives on the line for our safety. Decent accommodation for our soldiers is not only about welfare; it is about boosting morale and enabling them to discharge their duties with even greater dedication,” the governor said.
He explained that the project aligns with the Meaningful Development and Enhanced Peace and Security pillars of his administration’s MORE Agenda, stressing that peace and development must always go together.
Delta State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele, said the contract for the project was awarded in March 2023 and commended Oborevwori for ensuring its completion. He described the housing units as a bold move to support the Army and strengthen security in the state.
Also speaking, the Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, Lt. Col. Bukar Dabo, thanked the state government for the project, noting that the new accommodation would greatly improve the welfare of soldiers and sustain peace in the area.
Earlier, the Chairman of Ika South Local Government Council, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, said the Army’s presence in the area had already boosted security of lives and property, and praised the governor for approving the project.
In his remarks, Chief Boniface Ebite, who represented the Dein of Agbor, said the people of Agbor were proud of the governor’s achievements, describing the project as significant due to the town’s strategic location. He assured Oborevwori of the continued support of the people.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by top military officers, government officials, political leaders, and dignitaries, including the Brigade Commander of 63 Brigade, Brig. Gen. M. A. Shonibare.
