No More Mosquito Bites! Delta Shares Millions of Treated Nets

Asaba, Delta State – Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has started a big and important project to help keep people, especially children and pregnant women, safe from malaria. At a colorful event in Asaba, he launched the sharing of over 3.1 million insecticide-treated nets all across Delta State.

Malaria is a sickness caused by mosquito bites, and it can make people very sick. Sadly, it even causes many deaths every year, especially among little children and pregnant women. But the good news is that malaria can be prevented, and one of the best ways is by sleeping inside insecticide-treated mosquito nets. These nets kill mosquitoes and stop them from biting people while they sleep.

At the event, which was held at the Event Centre in Asaba, many important people came. These included government officials, health experts, and leaders from different communities. Governor Oborevwori, who was represented by Sir Chris Osakwe, said that even though Delta State’s malaria cases have dropped to 10%, the fight is not over. He wants everyone to help make sure malaria disappears completely.

The Governor shared some serious facts. Every year, Nigeria has about 110 million cases of malaria, and the sickness causes about 30 out of every 100 child deaths and 11 out of every 100 deaths of mothers. Nigeria alone makes up about 25% of all malaria cases in Africa!

Health leaders at the event, including the Federal Ministry of Health and international groups like the World Health Organization (WHO) and Catholic Relief Services, agreed that this campaign is very important. They all said using these special nets is one of the best ways to stay safe from mosquito bites.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Delta State’s Health Commissioner, said the net-sharing project is a big reminder to everyone to take action and protect themselves and their families.

During the event, people were shown how to use the nets properly. Mr. Emmanuel Odejerho even explained it in Pidgin English so everyone could understand. He told people not to misuse the nets, like using them for fishing or covering crops, but to sleep inside them every night.

At the end of the event, there was a fun moment where the Governor’s representative showed everyone how to sleep inside the net the right way. Nets were also shared out to some people.

Why This Matters: Sleeping under a treated mosquito net can save your life. It’s like having an invisible shield that protects you from dangerous mosquito bites. The Governor and health workers want everyone in Delta State to have this protection — and use it every night!

So if you get a mosquito net, remember: hang it, tuck it, and sleep inside it every night. Let’s say goodbye to malaria — one net at a time!
