No hiding place for corruption — Ogwashi-Uku Poly boss under fire

The Delta State House of Assembly has indicted the Rector of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, over allegations of financial recklessness, misappropriation of funds, and disregard for the institution’s Governing Council and enabling laws.

The decision followed the adoption of the findings from a parliamentary investigative committee, which reviewed the financial and administrative records of the polytechnic.

According to the Assembly’s report, the committee uncovered several cases of unauthorised expenditures and administrative irregularities that occurred under Professor Achuenu’s leadership.

Lawmakers described his actions as a “flagrant abuse of office” and a “violation of the rules guiding the management of public institutions.”

As a result, the House endorsed the six-month suspension earlier imposed on Professor Achuenu by the Governing Council of the polytechnic. The Bursar of the institution was also suspended for six months for his involvement in the financial misconduct.

The Assembly stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in the use of public funds, warning that the government will not tolerate impunity or disregard for due process in educational institutions.

The House also directed the Ministry of Higher Education to closely monitor the administration of the polytechnic during the suspension period to ensure continuity and compliance with proper financial and administrative procedures.

Lawmakers said the move demonstrates the state’s renewed commitment to fiscal discipline and good governance across its higher education institutions.

At the time of filing this report, attempts to reach Professor Achuenu for comments through text messages were unsuccessful.

The Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, was established in 2002 by the Delta State Government to provide technical and vocational education to young Nigerians. The institution offers National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programs in various fields, including Engineering, Business Studies, Environmental Design, and Science Laboratory Technology.

The polytechnic plays a vital role in producing skilled manpower for both the public and private sectors and is one of the three state-owned polytechnics in Delta State, alongside those in Otefe-Oghara and Ozoro.
