The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra State, has placed an indefinite ban on the popular “signing off” tradition usually carried out by final-year students after their examinations.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the university registrar, Chinenye Okeke, and takes immediate effect.
According to the registrar, the management decided to stop the practice because it has repeatedly led to violence, disruption of university activities, and security risks. She explained that many times, unauthorised outsiders join students during the celebrations, causing trouble on campus.
“The ‘signing off’ practices have grown into unruly gatherings, sometimes resulting in disorderly conduct, threats to safety, and property damage,” Okeke said.
The university stressed that any student caught trying to engage in “signing off” activities will face serious disciplinary actions, which may include rustication (suspension from the university).
The management also issued a warning to outsiders, saying that anyone caught entering the campus to take part in the banned celebrations will be arrested and prosecuted for breach of peace.
Okeke said the school remains committed to ensuring safety, discipline, and academic excellence. She urged students to focus on their studies and report any form of misconduct or threats to the right authorities.
With this move, NAU joins other universities in Nigeria that have cracked down on unruly “sign out” traditions, choosing to prioritise safety and order over celebration rituals.
