Abuja, May 11, 2025 — The Nigeria Police Force has issued a public notice to all motorists across the country, reminding them that driving with tinted, coloured, shaded, or darkened vehicle windows without a valid permit is against the law.
According to the Police, while wearing tinted sunglasses for protection against the sun while walking or cycling is perfectly legal, the rules are stricter when it comes to vehicles.
Referencing Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, the Police stated that all car owners have only 14 days from the date of purchase or importation to either replace the tinted glass or apply for a permit. This applies to all vehicles, including those with factory-fitted tinted windows.
“Driving with tinted glass requires a valid permit. However, walking with tinted shades is allowed. Two different actions, two different laws,” the Police said in a statement.
To avoid penalties or legal issues, vehicle owners are advised to ensure they obtain the necessary tinted glass permit through the official Nigeria Police portal at www.possap.gov.ng.
The Nigeria Police emphasized the importance of compliance to promote safety and transparency across Nigerian roads.
“Stay safe. Stay stylish. Stay legal,” the statement concluded.
