The non-governmental organization Eye on the Future Initiative (EFI) launched a mental health outreach program on Tuesday in Bomadi, Delta State, to support locals facing tough economic times. Held at the Bomadi Local Government Council Secretariat, the event aimed to remind people to “Nor Go Kill Yourself, E Go Better,” a phrase in pidgin meaning, “Don’t give up; things will get better.”
During the outreach, residents received free medical checkups to assess their health, including blood pressure tests. EFI representatives also offered advice on managing stress and maintaining mental wellness. Comrade Josephine Omordior, EFI’s Executive Director, explained that the event was organized to address the increasing mental health needs in the community.
“Many people are struggling due to the current economic challenges. We organized this program to remind everyone that there is hope for the future and to promote mental wellness,” Omordior said. “We’re here to encourage people not to give in to depression and to keep their spirits high.”
EFI partnered with Bomadi Local Government Council for the outreach. Comrade Victor Sorokwu, Chairman of EFI’s Board of Trustees, praised the council’s support and said the event was held in Bomadi because of Council Chairman Hon. Dagidi Andaye’s dedication to the welfare of his people.
“Today, many are frustrated due to economic hardships, and we felt it was important to bring this program to Bomadi. Hon. Andaye is a leader who genuinely cares for his people, and we’re glad to work with him to spread this message,” Sorokwu stated.
The council’s Secretary, Mr. Famous Ofurobiri, expressed gratitude to EFI for launching the program in Bomadi and encouraged locals to avoid stressful situations and make life easier. Ofurobiri highlighted the council’s ongoing skills training initiative, which aims to empower locals and provide them with self-reliance despite economic challenges.
“Mental health is essential to a healthy life,” Ofurobiri said. “We want our people to stay mentally strong. Through this partnership, we’re showing Bomadi residents that we’re committed to their wellbeing.”
Hon. Adaka Amame-engine, the local council’s Health Supervisor, urged residents to get health checkups and take the recommended precautions. He emphasized that the program was essential, especially during such challenging times.
Participants of the program expressed gratitude for the free health services and guidance. Mrs. Patience Talent and Mrs. Okerede William, two locals who attended, said the advice they received was helpful. “I got my blood pressure checked, and they advised me to cut down on fatty foods,” said Mrs. William.
The event concluded with a road walk through Bomadi town, where EFI volunteers promoted the importance of mental health. Hon. Andaye was recognized as a patron of EFI, and a plaque was presented to the council in appreciation of their support.
This outreach program shows EFI’s dedication to helping locals stay mentally and physically healthy during difficult times, reminding everyone that with community support, brighter days lie ahead.
