NGF reveals date to implement financial autonomy for judiciary

Following the strike by JUSUN that started on April 6, 2021, over the non-implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary, the Nigerian Governor’s Forum has revealed the date for the implementation of financial autonomy for state legislative and judiciary.

These were revealed by the Chairman of the NGF, Dr. Kayode Fayemi after a meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari at the State House on Monday.

According to the NGF Chairman, revealed that the Governor’s forum has never been opposed to the issue of financial autonomy and that the governors, the speakers, and judges are on the same page.

Also, he further revealed that Nigerians should expect implementation of the financial autonomy in May while adding that an agreement has been reached upon emerging from a meeting with the Solicitor-General of the Federation, the representative of the judiciary, the representative of the Conference of Speakers, and House of Representatives.

However, the NGF’s revelation came few hours after members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) staged a peaceful protest at the National Assembly in solidarity with judiciary workers who are protesting in favor of financial autonomy.

It was gathered that lawyers had earlier assembled at the Court of Appeal gate before proceeding to the National Assembly complex in their numbers before they were stopped by security operatives from entering the Assembly.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Friday by the leadership of the NBA, Olumide Akpata had earlier directed its branch chairmen nationwide to embark on a peaceful protest on Monday and all other subsequent Monday to their various state government house in the 36 states over the unwillingness of governors to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary until their demands are met.

In other to press the demand, the NBA President in the statement also urged the branch leaders to effectively mobilize their members towards the visit to the state government houses.
