NERC Enforces Free Meter Policy, Warns DisCos Against Illegal Charges

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has raised concerns over reports that some Distribution Companies (DisCos) are requiring customers to apply and pay for the replacement of faulty or obsolete meters within their service areas.

In a statement, NERC has stated that such actions contravene the Commission’s Order No. NERC/246/2021, which governs the structured replacement of meters within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

The Commission reiterated that, according to the Order, no customer with a functional meter should be forcibly moved to an estimated billing plan. If a DisCo determines that a customer’s meter is faulty or outdated, it is the DisCo’s obligation to replace it free of charge, provided that the customer did not cause the damage.

NERC assured the public of its dedication to protecting customer rights and upholding regulatory standards. The Commission also warned that penalties would be imposed on any licensees failing to comply with its regulations.

Customers are urged to report any instances of non-compliance with this directive through the following NERC channels:
