The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a transformer explosion at the Jebba Transmission Substation was responsible for a temporary disturbance in the national grid. The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 am on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
In a statement released by the TCN, it was reported that the bus section of a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation exploded, triggering the protection system. The system promptly activated, opening the busbars to contain the explosion, thus preventing a fire outbreak and further damage to nearby equipment.
The immediate response by the protection system resulted in a temporary disruption of the national grid, causing a brief period of power instability across various regions.
“Our engineers at Jebba have successfully carried out switchings, isolating the faulty current transformer. They have equally reconfigured the busbar arrangement, restoring power supply to the station, and other parts of the grid,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN.
TCN reassured the public that the situation is under control, and engineers have swiftly managed to isolate the issue and restore stability to the grid. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that such incidents do not lead to prolonged disruptions in the future.
