NAFDAC Removes Fake Medicines and Weapons from Onitsha Market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has removed 50 truckloads of fake medicines from a market in Onitsha, Anambra State. During the operation, they also found dangerous weapons, including two rifles, bullets, and machetes.

NAFDAC officials said they started the operation on February 10 and were shocked to find the weapons hidden in the market. The head of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said someone might have planned to harm a top officer of the agency, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, who often works in that area.

Security officers arrested two people who tried to stop NAFDAC from taking the fake drugs. The suspects are now helping with investigations.

Even though some criminals tried to fight back, NAFDAC said they would not stop their work because they wanted to protect people from harmful medicines. Market leaders have been helpful, and some parts of the market will reopen soon.

The fake medicines have been taken to a safe place, and NAFDAC will continue working to remove bad drugs from the country so that people only get safe medicines.
