Motorola to launch new Razr foldable this year

The CEO of Chinese technology giant Lenovo which now owns the Motorola brand, Yang Yuanging has confirmed that the new Motorola foldable phone is coming ‘very soon’ with some improvements to the device’s hinge.

Yang Yuanqing made the confirmation to CNBC during an interview at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Wednesday.

Though, Yang didn’t expand much on what’s new with the upcoming Razr that will be available June 1st this year but said its inner display could have a less notable crease when unfolded, an issue that just about every foldable maker has to contend with. “I think it’s much better,” Yang told CNBC about the new device.

He said the improvements would focus on the hinge and the applications on the device. Smartphone makers from Samsung to Honor that have launched foldable phones have focused on the hinge to make sure it is robust and also does not produce a line in the screen of the device. Yang said this is where the next generation of Razr phones would see improvements.

Motorola spokesperson, Luciana Vedovato, told the Verge that Motorola released its most recent iteration of the Razr last year, which offers several improvements over previous versions but is only available in China and Europe.

The Razr is one of the brand’s most iconic mobile phones and was first launched by Motorola in 2004. It became one of the most popular flip phones of the 2000s.
