Mother and Daughter Jailed for Stealing Dried Meat in Ogun State

An Abeokuta court has sentenced a mother and her daughter to six months in prison for stealing dried meat, cow skin (ponmo), and stockfish worth ₦1 million.

The two women, Falilatu Amidu and Ayisatu Amidu, live in Abeokuta, Ogun State. They were found guilty of working together to steal the goods.

The judge, Mrs O. Odumosu, said there was strong evidence proving they committed the crime. However, she gave them the option to pay a ₦5,000 fine instead of going to jail. The court also ordered them to pay ₦100,000 each to the person they stole from before they could use the fine option.

The theft happened in August 2024 at Lafenwa Market. The prosecutor, Inspector Kehinde Fawunmi, explained that Falilatu was helping a trader, Mrs Kafayat Alao, to move her goods. But instead of delivering them, she took a big sack of dried meat, ponmo, and stockfish.

When Mrs Alao went to check on Falilatu, she discovered both the woman and the goods were missing. Later, the police found out that Falilatu gave the stolen items to her daughter, Ayisatu, to sell.

The court ruled that their actions broke the law, leading to their punishment.
