A yet-to-be-identified man’s head that has been chopped off was found at Oghenevweta junction in Ughelli Delta State on Saturday, May 1, 2021, over an age-long crisis involving two communities.
The crisis involves the Otor-Iwhreko and Ekuigbo community fighting over who should be in charge of revenue collection from the main market in Ughelli.
It was gathered that the crisis recurred on Thursday, April 28, and had claimed the lives of three persons including a market woman that was hit by a stray bullet.
The crisis has been an aged battle between the Otor-Iwhreko community and the Ekuigbo community, two neighboring communities.
According to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) worldwide, Hon. Abel Oshevire called on the two communities to encase their swords for peace to reign and allowed constitutional and traditional authorities to resolve the age-long crisis of who should be responsible for the control and collection of revenue in the market.
In the statement, the President-General of UPU, Olorogun Dr. Moses Taiga explained that the Urhobo people shared a common ancestry and blood link, stating that the tradition forbid the shedding of blood and destruction of properties, adding that no piece of land or property is worthy of any form of killing.
The statement further stressed that peace between the communities is crucial and a permanent solution is needed.
The union hereby calls for the Chairman of Ughelli North LGA and the State Government to urgently intervene in the unending crisis rocking the market.
The union while seeking lasting peace also appeals to all meaning sons and daughters of the two communities to step into the matter and call for normalcy.
Also, the union further call on political and community leaders of both communities to step in immediately not to allow the crisis to escalate beyond the present state.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Edafe Bright when contacted via WhatsApp over the discovery of the chopped human head, stated that he wasn’t aware of the incident.
