In a tragic turn of events, a 46-year-old Uber driver, Muftau Abiodun Musa, took his own life in Osogbo, Osun State, after being asked to leave his rented apartment.
Musa, who had been living in the apartment since May 2024, was informed that the property owner planned to renovate and needed all tenants to vacate by the end of January 2025. Three days before his death, the tenant who sublet the room to him reminded him to find alternative housing, which reportedly deepened his feelings of despair.
Sources revealed that Musa had been battling severe depression for five years. Alongside this, he faced family pressure to get married, which compounded his struggles.
“Musa was already feeling overwhelmed. Being told to leave his home seemed to push him further into depression,” said a source close to the situation.
Before his death, Musa left a note requesting that his family be informed and stated that no one should mourn him. The note also pointed to his phone for further details.
This was not the first time Musa had attempted to take his life. In December 2023, he tried to hang himself but was saved by neighbors. Shortly after, he ingested poison and spent two months in the hospital recovering.
Despite moving in with his mother after his recovery, the unrelenting pressure to marry led him to seek independence. However, the notice to vacate his rented room appears to have been the final straw.
The Osun State Police Command has taken over the case, and the tragic incident has sparked conversations about mental health, housing insecurity, and the importance of emotional support.
