A man, Hassan, has taken his wife, Zainab, to a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, asking the court to end their nine-year-old marriage over allegations of infidelity. He also requested a DNA test to confirm if he is truly the father of their only child.
Zainab, however, agreed to the divorce but insisted that Hassan is the biological father of their child.
During his testimony, Hassan told the court that he and Zainab started dating in 2017 and later began living together without a formal marriage. According to him, the relationship became strained after a few years, and he told Zainab he was no longer interested.
Hassan said Zainab accused him of using and dumping her and demanded that he rent an apartment for her, set her up in business, and also pay for a shop.
“I gave her ₦400,000 to cover everything she asked for, and we ended the relationship,” Hassan told the court. “But she later returned, saying she was pregnant with my child. Although I doubted her claim, I took her back and have since been responsible for the child’s feeding, clothing, education, and health care.”
Hassan further alleged that Zainab had taken advantage of him financially by insisting the child belongs to him. “I don’t want to keep investing my love and resources, only to discover later that the child is not mine. I pray this honourable court to order a DNA test to confirm the child’s paternity,” he added.
After listening to both parties, the court president, Mrs. S. M. Akintayo, granted Hassan’s request. She ordered that Hassan, Zainab, and the child should all be present on the agreed date for the DNA test, which will be carried out at a hospital chosen by the court. The test results will be submitted directly to the court.
The case was adjourned until September 25 for further hearing.
