Tragedy struck earlier this week at a military barracks in Ibadan, Oyo State, when a man identified as Lawal Faruq allegedly set his ex-girlfriend, Omolola Hassan, on fire after their relationship ended.
According to reports, the incident happened after Faruq became enraged over the breakup. He allegedly poured petrol on Omolola and set her ablaze inside the barracks. The terrifying scene caused panic among residents, who rushed to help after hearing the woman’s screams.
Eyewitnesses said military personnel at the barracks quickly intervened, putting out the fire and taking Omolola to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, where she is currently receiving treatment for severe burns.
A counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the case on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), revealed that Faruq confessed to the act. The suspect reportedly told investigators that he and Omolola had taken an oath never to leave each other — a claim that has shocked many.
“The victim, Omolola Hassan, was reportedly doused with petrol and set on fire by the suspect, who was angered over the breakdown of their relationship,” Makama wrote.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, said the suspect has been arrested and that an investigation is ongoing.
The attack has sparked outrage among residents and social media users, who have condemned the growing trend of violence in failed romantic relationships across Nigeria. Many are calling for justice for Omolola and stricter laws against gender-based violence.
