Delta State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Chief Goodluck Ofobruku, while celebrating Workers Day, applauded the state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for his accomplishment in the area of workers’ welfare and human capital development over the past eight years.
He said the massive turnout is a result of workers’ gratitude over what the governor has fulfilled for them.
Comrade Ofobruku said this while addressing journalists during the Worker’s Day celebration held at Cenotaph, in Asaba, the state capital, on Monday.
The NLC boss said, workers are happy based on the existing friendly relationship with the government, as they are looking out for more government cooperation, solidarity, and request.
Ofobruku also said some workers are not happy about their salaries as nothing the union can do unless the government legislates on it, according to him, the issue of wages and salary increases is of the federal government.
“Until legislation is made and there is an enabling circular, we cannot talk of salary increment at the state level. But on the condition of service and other aspects of workers’ welfare, the state government has been doing very well. When you talk of a decent working environment, there is a multi-billion naira secretariat that has been given to workers.”
“Those who use to occupy the junior staff quarters as tenants, that place has been sold to them at a discounted rate and the workers suddenly become landlords. The state government is on the verge of building more low-cost houses for workers in the state, so we have every course to rejoice as the future is bright,” Ofoburuku said.
He then urged new workers who will be coming into the civil service to always show solidarity with the government to enable it to succeed.
