Ika community laments over bad roads, appeals for Okowa’s intervention

The people of Ute-Enugu and Ali-Iweriokpuru Community in Ute-Okpu, Ika North East Local Government Area have appealed to the Delta State Government to look into the sorry state of their major roads.

The Okpara-Uku (traditional ruler) of the community, Pa Cypril Bayem lamented the bad state of the only access to the community in a chat with newsmen

Pa Bayem revealed that the community had suffered untold hardship because of the road stressing that the economic and other meaningful activities that would have improved the lives of the people had been thwarted.

The ruler observed that successive administration had abandoned the community, adding, “As if we are not part of Delta State.”

“We want to believe that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will not treat us like others by ensuring that this all-important road is constructed,” he said.

Also speaking, the Okibali of the community, Comrade Ogadi stressed that the road was the only access road that connects their communities with other communities and had been in bad shape for over 10 years.

According to him, the road had gone worse with time and the community had been grossly affected, stating: “Things are very tough here as people are migrating to other places because of the road.”

On his part, another member of the community, Benson Ehima, noted that activities in the community were virtually at a standstill.

“Many businesses have folded down. Farmers go through a lot of hardship to transport their goods to markets. We are in dare need of government intervention. The suffering is indescribable,” he stated.

He also disclosed that teachers and other public officials posted to the area usually abscond as soon as their initial appearance.

“Parents have withdrawn their ward from schools in the area due to lack of teachers and the danger associated with the road whenever there is heavy downpour,” he added.
