The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has asked the Nigerian Natural Medicines Development Agency (NNMDA) to do something about the rise of unsafe herbal medicines in the country.
Kabir Elelu, an ICPC official in Lagos, spoke during a one-day training. He said many people sell herbal mixtures on the streets without proper checks, and this is dangerous for people’s health.
“These herbal mixtures sold by hawkers are causing serious health problems like liver diseases,” Elelu said. “The NNMDA should find a way to make herbal medicines safer for everyone.”
Martins Emeje, the leader of the NNMDA, said the agency is working to make natural medicines better and safer. He also said they are trying to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported medicines.
“In just one and a half years, we’ve shown that Nigeria can develop good medicines honestly and transparently,” Emeje added.
The training also included the launch of a group to fight corruption and ensure honesty in the NNMDA.
