The Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has honoured Comrade Chief Sheriff Mulade, a renowned environmentalist and activist, by decorating him as one of its patrons. Chief Mulade is also the National Coordinator of the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ).
The Delta-born UN Peace Ambassador, who holds the title of Ibe-Serimowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to promoting peace in the Niger Delta region, youth empowerment, media support, and advocating for improved welfare for local communities.
The decoration ceremony took place on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the CEPEJ Corporate Office in Ugolo-Okpe, located in the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. The Chairman of the ICC, Kenneth Orusi, led the decoration and praised Chief Mulade for his numerous contributions to society.
Orusi highlighted that Mulade was selected not merely to fill a position but because of his extensive record as a voice for the voiceless, his activism across Nigeria and globally, and his alignment with the Chapel’s mission to critique government policies that fail to benefit the grassroots.
“We have followed your antecedents, not just as a voice of the voiceless, but also because your influence spans beyond Delta State, Nigeria, and the globe. We recognize your campaigns for the welfare of people in the coastal areas, where the crude oil that feeds the nation originates,” Orusi stated.
Orusi also acknowledged Mulade’s strong advocacy for the creation of the Coastal Areas Development Agency (CADA) and linked this effort to the establishment of the Directorate of Riverine Infrastructure by the Delta State Government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He urged Mulade to continue his advocacy to ensure adequate funding and functioning of the Directorate.
In response, Comrade Mulade expressed his gratitude to the Chapel for recognizing his work and promised continued dedication to the cause of peace, environmental justice, and grassroots development.
“I am open to every progressive forum. My vision and calling are to support every progressive organization, movement, society, or nation,” Mulade said. He assured the Chapel of his support and expressed his desire to contribute even more to society.
The ceremony concluded with a call for Chief Mulade to play an active role in resolving crises and ensuring peace, particularly in the riverine communities of Delta State.
