Two persons have been arrested by the River State Government for accompanying a truckload that contains degraded animal skin popularly known as ‘Ponmo’ in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area.
These were disclosed to newsmen in Port Harcourt by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Fred Kpakol.
According to the Commissioner, the arrest came following a tip-off that some canda meat was imported into the state, stating that, they went in and found out it was from the Onne Port that it came from.
The Commissioner also revealed that the invoice for the truckload shows that the products came from Madagascar into the country.
He stated that the truck which contains candy meat when intercepted was opened, and discovered that the products were degraded and smelling before it was seized and taken to the police area command in Eleme for further investigation.
However, the Police Area Commander, Martins Nwogu explained that those arrested with the truck claimed that the consignment contained raw materials for making shoes and bags, adding that one Alhaji owns the products.
He also added that it had begun an investigation into the incident
Meanwhile, at press time when contacted the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni clarified that the command had yet to get a report but promised to contact the Eleme Area Command.
