Who is Mudashiru Obasa?
Mudashiru Obasa was the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the group responsible for making laws in the state. He had been in this position since 2015, but earlier this month, he was removed from office for alleged misconduct, including misuse of government funds.
What Did Obasa Do to Stop His Removal?
Before leaving for the United States, Obasa hid two important ceremonial objects called maces. These maces are symbols of authority used during official Assembly meetings. Obasa thought that hiding them would prevent lawmakers from holding the meeting to remove him.
How Did the Lawmakers Respond?
The lawmakers outsmarted Obasa by finding an old mace from another building. They used it to hold their meeting and voted to remove him. More than two-thirds of the Assembly members supported the decision, making it official.
What Happened After His Removal?
After his impeachment, Obasa traveled to Abuja to meet with President Bola Tinubu and other influential people. He argued that his removal was invalid because the official maces were not used. However, the lawmakers explained that they followed all the rules, and the old mace was legally allowed for such meetings.
Obasa’s Return to Lagos
Obasa is now returning to Lagos after spending some time in Abuja and the United States. Some of his loyal supporters are planning a welcome party for him. He will also be allowed to visit the Speaker’s residence to collect his belongings, but security officials will ensure nothing is taken without permission.
Why Was Obasa Removed?
Obasa faced several allegations, including:
- Misusing ₦43.5 billion of public funds.
- Spending ₦53 million on a personal trip to the United States with his mistress instead of Assembly staff.
- Approving ₦17 million monthly for the maintenance of his house and guest house.
The Bigger Picture
This story highlights how public officials can be held accountable for their actions. Despite trying to stop his removal, the lawmakers followed the rules and made sure the process was fair. It’s a reminder that leadership comes with responsibility and that actions have consequences.
