How DSPG Combines AI and Solar Energy to Revolutionize Education

Empowering Graduates with Advanced Technology and Skill Development

Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku (DSPG) is setting new benchmarks in renewable energy training and skill development under the leadership of its Rector, Builder Professor Emmanuel Achuenu.

Speaking at the 17th edition of the Journalists Hangout tagged From Parley to Party, organized by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Prof. Achuenu highlighted the institution’s strides in advancing technology and practical skills in Nigeria.

Prof. Achuenu described DSPG as a premier polytechnic in the South-South region, dedicated to fostering theoretical and practical knowledge. The institution’s primary goal, he stated, is to transition Nigeria’s economy from a knowledge-based to a skill-based system.

“The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has adopted a slogan: ‘Not just the degree, but the skill,’” he said. “At DSPG, we ensure that every student graduates with two certificates—one academic and one skill-based. This dual certification ensures that our graduates are not just academically qualified but also equipped with practical skills to contribute to the economy.”

DSPG’s Skill Developmental Center (SDC) offers certifications in various construction trades, including carpentry, block-laying, plumbing, welding, and painting. These certifications, recognized internationally by awarding bodies such as NABTEB and the Council of Registered Builders, are available to students and external participants alike.

In alignment with its skill-focused agenda, the institution mandates all lecturers to acquire a skill as a prerequisite for promotion, reflecting its commitment to hands-on education.

The Rector also unveiled the polytechnic’s Renewable Energy Training Center, which focuses on solar installation, manufacturing, and technology. “Our center trains individuals in cutting-edge solar energy solutions, preparing them to address Nigeria’s energy challenges,” Prof. Achuenu said.

A standout achievement is the Smart Campus initiative, which integrates technology into campus management to address issues like insecurity and energy. The initiative features Solar-powered generators, Motion detectors and voice-activated controls, and Biometric and facial recognition systems for security monitoring.

“This innovation positions DSPG as a leader in applying artificial intelligence to campus operations, ensuring efficiency and safety,” he noted.

Since assuming office in 2022, Prof. Achuenu has prioritized peace and development at DSPG. Collaborating with the past administration of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and with the support of the current governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has overseen critical infrastructure projects, including road networks and perimeter fencing to enhance security.

Additionally, the institution has constructed a 335-capacity solar-powered lecture hall using internally generated revenue (IGR) and fully equipped the Science Laboratory Technology program.

At a recent exhibition in Abuja, DSPG showcased 15 innovative projects, with 10 successfully presented, demonstrating the institution’s focus on practical outcomes. Prof. Achuenu announced plans for a dedicated exhibition in 2025 to further highlight DSPG’s innovations.

Under his leadership, DSPG has maintained 100% accreditation of its programs by the NBTE. He has introduced new Higher National Diploma (HND) programs and established the School of Environmental Sciences, which encompasses departments such as Architecture, Estate Management, and Urban Planning.

In Mass Communication, the institution has operationalized a radio station approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), providing practical training for students. Prof. Achuenu also revived a previously canceled TETFUND project for the department.

The NUJ event provided a platform for the Rector to share these achievements. Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, Chairman of the Delta State Council of the NUJ, commended Prof. Achuenu’s efforts. “The Journalists’ Hangout is a space where we discuss societal development with stakeholders,” he said, appreciating the Rector for his transformative impact on DSPG.

Through innovative programs and skill-driven education, Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku continues to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, positioning its graduates to excel in an evolving economy.
