Hon. Ezechi Exposes Nigeria’s Legal Failures: ‘We Have Laws, But No Enforcement!’

Ndokwa Contributes to Power Grid but Gets Left in the Dark!

At the 10th edition of the ‘Journalists Hangout’ tagged “From Parley to Party,” organized by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Member representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani federal constituency, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, delivered a thought-provoking address on key national issues. The event, held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, focused on the importance of media in nation-building and the challenges facing Nigeria’s legislative and executive enforcement systems.

Hon. Ezechi, in his address, noted the disconnect between existing laws and their enforcement. “We have laws but enforcement is our major problem. Enforcement of our law, which says don’t do this, and if you do this, it contravenes this section of the Constitution, but to enforce it is the challenge,” he remarked. He highlighted the need for respect for the law, lamenting that in Nigeria, individuals in power often flout laws with impunity, unlike in Western countries where the law remains supreme, regardless of one’s status.

Ezechi emphasized the critical role of the media in holding leaders accountable and showcasing governmental policies. He called on the media to accurately report on national issues and urged fellow politicians to engage with journalists rather than avoid them. Referring to a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, he noted, “President Tinubu was upset that some in his cabinet and aides were not using the media enough as expected.” Ezechi reiterated that the media is essential for promoting the activities and policies of leaders, both for transparency and to ensure the public stays informed.

On his role as a representative in Abuja, Ezechi explained his commitment to staying connected with his constituents. “I want to be seen by my people because it is one of my promises. My going to Abuja is not to run from them. Denying access means I have not done justice to my conscience.” He stressed his dedication to being present in Delta State and interacting regularly with the people who elected him, ensuring that his representation reflects their interests.

Ezechi went on to list his legislative accomplishments, including the sponsorship of numerous motions and bills aimed at improving the lives of Ndokwa/Ukwuani constituents. One of his key achievements is the successful siting of the Federal University of Medical Science in Ndokwa, which he described as a landmark development. He also highlighted the appointment of a Ndokwa native as the Deputy Governor of Delta State, marking a historic first for the region.

Addressing the longstanding power supply issues in Ndokwa, Ezechi pledged to work with stakeholders to resolve the electricity crisis. “We contribute like elephants but eat like ants,” he said, referencing Ndokwa’s contribution to national electricity generation. He assured his constituents that efforts were underway to ensure Ndokwa benefits from the resources it provides to the nation.

Speaking on bills he has sponsored, Ezechi expressed confidence that several important legislations concerning the Ndokwa nation would soon be passed, promising they would bring significant benefits to the region, Delta State, and Nigeria at large. He noted his recognition as one of the top-performing lawmakers in the National Assembly, with several bills progressing through various legislative stages.

Ezechi also addressed the ongoing work at the Kwale Industrial Park, a major project initiated by the previous Delta State administration. He acknowledged the challenges posed by land disputes but praised the state government’s efforts to resolve them. He assured attendees that the project, once completed, would greatly benefit the Ndokwa community.

The NUJ Delta State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, commended Ezechi for attending the Hangout and keeping the event’s chain of episodes unbroken. He reiterated that the Journalists Hangout aims to create a relaxed atmosphere for stakeholders to engage with the media on pressing societal issues. He called on government officers not to shy away from journalists, reminding them that the media plays a vital role in fostering societal progress.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Ezechi lamented the economic challenges facing Nigeria under the current administration, especially the high cost of living. He called for a review of government policies to provide relief to the suffering masses, noting that while he believed in President Tinubu’s vision, the harsh realities on the ground were undeniable.

Ezechi’s participation in the Journalists Hangout demonstrated his commitment to transparency, accountability, and constant engagement with his constituents, while emphasizing the indispensable role of the media in shaping public opinion and fostering national development.
