Helping Women Speak Up in Politics: IPC Starts Talks with Female Journalists and Online Publishers

Date: Friday, May 23, 2025 Location: Lagos, Nigeria

A group called the International Press Centre (IPC) is working hard to help more women get involved in politics and elections in Nigeria. To do this, they are starting special meetings with female journalists and media leaders.

These meetings will take place in Port Harcourt on Saturday, May 24 and in Abuja on Tuesday, May 27. IPC is working with two other important groups: NAWOJ (Nigeria Association of Women Journalists) and GOCOP (Guild of Corporate Online Publishers).

The big goal is to help female journalists talk more about women’s issues in politics and help more women be seen and heard in government.

This project is supported by the European Union (EU) through a program called EU-SDGN II (Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria). The EU wants Nigeria to have a stronger and fairer democracy, where everyone—especially women—can take part.

The boss of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, said,

“We want to find smart ways to make women’s voices louder in the media, especially during elections. Journalists can help change the way people think and help shape the future of our country.”

At the meetings, female editors, TV presenters, radio producers, and online media bosses will come together to share ideas and create a plan for how they can work as a team.

Mr. Arogundade also said that journalism is not just about telling stories—it can influence leaders and help make important changes in society.

At the end of the meetings, they plan to:

  • Create official agreements (called MoUs) to continue working together,
  • Set goals and strategies to keep improving,
  • And find ways for female journalists to support more women in politics.

This is all part of IPC’s bigger dream: to help more women journalists become leaders—and to help more women become politicians who can speak up for others.

The EU-SDGN II program has five important parts, including helping the government, courts, political parties, civil society, and the media. Together, they want to build a democracy that includes everyone.
